About Us…

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement is located in the mid-Hudson River valley where the Esopus Creek flows into the Hudson River. The church has been part of the village of Saugerties since it was founded in 1859.  We are part of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and the New York Metropolitan Synod.

The current church building was consecrated on February 9, 1896 and underwent a complete renovation in 1921.  A Parish Life Center (PLC) was added in 1972.  The PLC contains Sunday School classrooms, a large hall, a kitchen, and an office, and a lounge.

In addition to providing for the spiritual needs of our community through our worship and Sunday School programs, we provide food programs through our God Given Bread ministry through a luncheon program, a food pantry, mass food distributions and holiday food baskets.

Our Mission

We believe our mission is to bring witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In order to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we who are part of the family of faith commit ourselves to maintain a place of worship to provide for the spiritual needs of all; to be consistently involved in a program of Christian Education; and to be ever mindful of and give thanks to the Grace of God, employing our time, talent, and treasures in ways that portray good stewardship.
